Carpenter ants are found throughout the United States. These insects are capable of causing damage to structural timbers or other wooden members of a home or building. These insects are generally large in size and are predominantly black or black and red in color. Reproductive swarming usually occurs in the spring or early summer. These insects nest outdoors as well as indoors and may be found in damp or decaying wood. These insects typically create galleries or cavities in the wood which have a smooth and sandpapered appearance. Carpenter ants feed on sweets, insects, meats, and greases. A thorough inspection is recommended to try to determine the location of any nests before control measures are undertaken. Liquid chemicals, dusts and even dry baits may be utilized in treating infestations.
